I added to HB1869, which would extend the protections of the PA Heart & Lung Act to members of the Pennsylvania National Guard affected by #COVID19 who currently do not receive state medical benefits or workers’ compensation to cover Guardsmen who get sick while on state Active Duty. During this pandemic, it is unacceptable to leave these frontline workers unprotected and without support.

The PA National Guard has supported our community throughout the pandemic by staffing testing sites in Montgomery County, distributing supplies from food banks and are providing support to long-term care facilities that are suffering from staff shortages due to the spread of COVID-19.

Currently, members are on duty in Senate District 44 at the Southeast Veterans Center, in East Vincent Township where 19 veterans have tested positive, 12 veterans have died from COVID-19, and 25 staff members have tested positive. The PA Guard has been helping fill the gaps in staffing shortages and assist veteran residents.

Thank you to Senator Pam Iovino for her guidance and Senator Mike Regan for his efforts in expanding the Heart and Lung Act. HB1869 will now go over to the House as amended for final approval.
