HARRISBURG, April 12, 2024 – State Senator Katie Muth (D-Chester/Montgomery/Berks), chair of the Pennsylvania Senate Democratic Policy Committee, will join Senator Carolyn Comitta (D-Chester) to co-host a virtual public hearing on Wednesday to discuss the environmental and public health impacts associated with spreading oil and gas waste on Pennsylvania roadways.

The hearing will be held on Wednesday, April 17 at 11 a.m. on Zoom and anyone interested can click here to register.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection declared a moratorium on spraying produced water from conventional wells onto roadways in Pennsylvania in 2018. However, despite that moratorium, reports indicate that companies disposed of over 2 million gallons of toxic, radioactive drilling wastewater on Pennsylvania roads between 2018 and the end of 2020. The spreading of drilling waste on roads raises significant concern for public and environmental health due to the toxic chemicals contained in the brine. The hearing will feature a discussion on the issues and impacts associated with this practice from a public health, environmental and regulatory perspective.

Scheduled participants in the hearing include David Hess, former DEP secretary and editor of PA Environmental Digest; Karen Feridun, co-founder, Better Path Coalition; Dr. William Burgos, Professor, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Penn State University; and Siri Lawson, Warren County resident.

The hearing will also be live-streamed at SenatorMuth.com/Policy and on Senator Muth’s Facebook page.

Media participation is encouraged.
