PITTSBURGH, February 9, 2024 – Senate Democratic Policy Committee Chair Katie Muth (D-Chester/Montgomery/Berks) and House Democratic Policy Chair Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie) will join several legislators next Thursday in Allegheny County to discuss legislation to establish a statewide eviction record sealing policy.

Sen. Muth and Rep. Bizzarro will be joined by Senate Democratic Leader Jay Costa (D-Allegheny, Senator Nikil Saval (D-Philadelphia), Senator Judy Schwank (D-Berks), and state Representatives Ismail Smith Wade-El (D-Lancaster) and Abigail Salisbury (D-Allegheny) at both a press conference and public hearing to highlight legislation to provide fairness to renters by establishing procedures for limited access to eviction records. 

First, on Thursday February 15 at noon, several members of the Senate and House Democratic Policy Committees will host a press conference at the Wilkinsburg Borough Building to highlight legislation on eviction sealing.

Following the press conference, the Senate Democratic Policy Committee and House Democratic Policy Committee will host a joint public hearing on legislation to establish a statewide eviction record sealing policy. The hearing will take place on Thursday, February 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Wilkinsburg Borough Building located at 605 Ross Ave., Wilkinsburg, PA 15221. The hearing will also accommodate virtual participation, and anyone interested in watching on Zoom can click here to register.

The hearing will feature three panels of testimony that will include discussion about the impact on Pennsylvania residents, the importance of fair housing, and the legal implications of not sealing eviction records.

Scheduled participants in the hearing include Haley Passione, Court Resource Navigator, RentHelp PGH; Holly Beck, Division Supervising Attorney, Community Legal Services of Philadelphia; Deanna Dyer, Policy Director, Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence; Kyle Webster, Vice President of Housing and General Counsel, Action Housing; Maura Jacob, Policy & Community Impact Officer, The Pittsburgh Foundation; and Aaron Zappia, Director of Government Affairs, Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania.
