ROYERSFORD, November 14, 2024: State Sen. Katie Muth (D-Chester/Montgomery/Berks) announced that eight projects to improve local parks and preserve open space across Senate District 44 were awarded nearly $3 million in state grants through the Community Conservation Partnerships Program.

The local funding announced earlier this week by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) was part of a $79.4 million investment in over 300 projects across Pennsylvania. The Community Conservation Partnerships Program supports projects to develop new parks, rehabilitate existing spaces, and protect vital natural habitats.

“This nearly $3 million investment in SD44 communities will continue to improve the parks and recreational opportunities in our district for residents of all ages,” Muth said. “Enhancing outdoor recreation and preserving open space are critical initiatives especially with continued population growth across the region.”

The following projects in SD44 projects received funding:

Chester County:

  • East Whiteland Township received $1 million toward the acquisition of approximately 52 acres along Morstein Road in East Whiteland Township for a new community park.
  • Chester County received $393,000 toward the acquisition of approximately 5.27 acres on Boot Road in East Caln Township to provide a trailhead on the Chester Valley Trail.
  • Honey Brook Township received $212,000 for the rehabilitation of James A. Umble Memorial Park. The work will include the renovation of a tennis court, basketball court and parking area; construction of pedestrian walkway; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
  • Spring City Borough received $350,000 for further development of the Spring City Boat Launch Park along the Schuylkill River. The work will include streambank restoration; construction of pavilion, picnic area, pedestrian walkways and parking area; installation of lighting and security cameras; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
  • Upper Uwchlan Township received $350,000 for the rehabilitation and further development of Hickory Park. The work will include the renovation of pedestrian walkways, volleyball courts and parking area; construction of pickleball courts, basketball court, multipurpose field, baseball field and pavilion; installation of stormwater management measures; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
  • Chester County received $75,000 to coordinate and fund the 2025 Open Space Accelerator program to develop open space implementation plans for municipalities across the county.

Montgomery County:

  • Lower Providence Township received $242,900 for the rehabilitation and further development of Redtail Park. The work will include the renovation of the parking area; construction of comfort station, pedestrian walkways and internal loop trail; installation of utilities; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
  • Upper Providence Township received $362,500 for the development of Taylor Park. The work will include construction of internal loop trail and parking area, ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
